Abstract: The electrochemical basis for understanding the interaction of thiol collectors with sulfide minerals is reviewed. Spectroscopic techniques are being increasingly applied to augment electrochemical studies and provide unequivocal identification of species formed at mineral surfaces in flotation systems. These include X ray photoelectron, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and, more recently, surface enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy. The progress that has been made in the application of electrochemical measurement to monitor and control flotation plants is also considered.
