Abstract: The experimental study was performed by using 1-D consolidation test on the dredged materials solidified with reactive MgO, an environmental-friendly and low carbon binder. MgO-solidified sludges with different MgO contents and curing times were analysied. The results show that the addition of MgO has an important influence on the compressibility behavior of solidified sludge. The compressibility of MgO-solidified sludge tends to decrease with curing time and MgO content, while the yielding stress increases gradually. When MgO amount increases to 6% of dry soil mass, the compressibility of solidified sludge changes significantly, from high compressible soil to low compressible soil. Based on the concept of compression modulus, it can be found that the compression modulus against consolidation stress curves are significantly affected by MgO content, and the peak modulus appears once the MgO content reaches around 6%. Whether the phenomenon of peak modulus occurs is closely related with the formation of soil structure owing to the chemical bonding, and this finding agrees well with the variation of compressibility with MgO content. Finally, the result suggests that the peak modulus tends to change with compression index with a power function model.
