Abstract: To improve the optimum water content of silt and overcome the difficulty of compaction when silt is used in highway subgrade engineering, the stabilizer named as CVC was prepared by mixing cement, vermiculite and quick lime. The microstructures of stabilizer and stabilized silt were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD). Through compaction test, California bearing ratio test (CBR) and unconfined compressive test, the most appropriate composition of CVC stabilizer were determined. Based on this, compression modulus of resilience test, water resistance test, freezing and thawing test were carried out to evaluate the road performance of the stabilized silt. The results show that vermiculite can disperse evenly and forms a stable structure with silt. The water in silt can be absorbed effectively by vermiculite, and the loss of strength caused by vermiculite can be made up with the adding of cement and quick lime, and finally the properties of the stabilized silt are improved. The optimum proportion of CVC stabilizer is 8% for cement, 4% for vermiculite and 3% for quick lime by weight of silt. Compared with other stabilizer, the road performance of CVC is better, and it is worth being popularized with a promising application future.
